Useful Advice for First Notification of Loss (FNOL)
Any property that is suffering water damage please consider doing the following things:
STOP the water at its source – turn off at the stopcock / isolate the leak.
TURN OFF electricity (only if you can do so without stepping in water)
TURN ON heating in the affected rooms to 23 degrees and open all windows.
FOUL WATER – remove carpets and store in secure location.
DOCUMENT everything, take images of the damage, items can then be removed.
OBTAIN quotes for the damage.
If the property is not secure, arrange for temporary repairs to be carried out to secure e.g., board up windows.
* Please take photos and only carry out temporary repairs, keeping any receipts.- Make sure you have reported the incident to the police, and obtained a CAD or Crime reference number (CRN)
- Start itemising any known losses and gathering receipts/evidence of their purchased items along with any images you may have.
- Obtain at least 2 quotes for any damages caused for review by the insurer.
- Do not reply to any correspondence other than providing your details.
- Supply any CCTV or images of the alleged incident.
- Make sure that all H&S/risk assessments are available for when the claim is being investigated.
- Report any incidents that you are aware of in an accident book or equivalent.
- Make sure that any witnesses/staff provide a written statement of the event.
- Provide contact details for the relevant person who will be dealing with the matter.
- Stop the car – failing to do so is an offence.
- Switch off the engine and turn on the hazard lights.
- Check for any injuries to yourself or passengers – make a note of any passengers.
- Call an ambulance, if necessary, Call the police – 999 or 101 depending on the situation
- Give your details to anyone else involved.
- Collect details from any other drivers, passengers, or witnesses.
- Take photos of the vehicles involved, ideally in situ.
- Contact your insurer/broker.
- Do not admit liability or exchange in any discussion around liability.
- Do not correspond with the other party or any of their representatives.
*If the vehicle is undrivable and still at the scene, please ensure this information is relayed to your broker/insurer so that recovery can be arranged asap.
Other information to collect from the incident:
- The registration numbers of all vehicles involved, plus a note of each vehicle’s colour, make and model.
- The time and date of the crash.
- A sketch showing the positions of the vehicles involved.
- A description of the weather conditions, plus anything unusual you notice about the road quality or lighting.
- A list of damage to vehicles and a description of any injuries sustained by pedestrians, drivers, and passengers.
Any motor incident can be very stressful; however, the above information should be recorded as soon as possible after the event.
